We are the Queen Margaret Union, also known as the QMU or simply the QM. We are one of the two students' unions at University of Glasgow and are the home for live music, alternative events, and general good times on campus.

Founded in 1890, we began life as the Queen Margaret College: an academic institution that gave women the opportunity to gain an education at a time when the University of Glasgow was male-only. We later merged with the University, and became the female-only union on campus, the men's union being the Glasgow University Union (GUU). Both Unions became mixed-gender in the early 80s and have co-existed since then.

As far as we are aware the University of Glasgow is totally unique in having not just one student association taking on the job of supporting and representing students, but instead having 4 independent student-run organisations each vying to do so. There is us, the GUU, the Students' Representative Council (SRC) and the Glasgow University Sports Association (GUSA). Together, we all play a role in enriching the student experience within the University of Glasgow community.

As a member-led organisation we exist to provide opportunities and support for our members, whilst also giving them a place to relax, socialise and be themselves. We also have a rich history of offering volunteering and development opportunities to our members, including work around student journalism, fundraising and activism, lighting and sound production, and events management.

For the past 50 years we have lived in our big, brutalist building at 22 University Gardens which contains multiple food and drink outlets, a number of meeting and studying rooms, and a renowned live music venue which has seen the likes of Queen, Nirvana, and Franz Ferdinand play over the years. The venue is still very much in use and we already have 15 major touring artists hiring our venue in Term 1, as well as a diverse programme of internally-ran events to support the commercial side of our operations.

As a registered Scottish Charity and non-profit organisation, every penny that we make from selling drinks at our bars to sandwiches in our cafe goes towards our charitable purpose: to enrich the lives of University of Glasgow students.

This is a challenging yet exciting time to join us. We have a bold vision for the future, which builds on our rich heritage, success of the past and a long tradition of service to students. However, to achieve this we have to change quite radically.

Following an external diagnostic, which identified a number of strategic challenges and risks, the Union has been through a period of significant change. This has resulted in a more sustainable staffing structure, governance reform and a new draft strategic plan to guide the next chapter of QMU’s journey.

We are now about to start a new academic year with a bold new strategic plan, several new members of senior staff including a new CEO and Operations Manager, and a revitalised and positive drive to be the best organisation that we can.
