FRESHERS' WEEK 2019

WHO ARE WE?

We are the Queen Margaret Union, also known as the QMU or simply the QM. We are one of the two students' unions at University of Glasgow and we'll be your home for live music, alternative events, and general good times on campus.

Over the past few months our team of staff and student volunteers have been working round-the-clock to put together what we think is our best and most diverse Freshers' Week line-up yet.

Here at the QM, we are all about equality. Regardless of your race, your age, your sex, your gender, your beliefs, your body, or anything else: we believe that good times are for all, and we are here to provide them. This is why we've committed to make this Freshers' Week, and all of our in-house events, have a 50:50 gender balance by the year 2022 in association with the Keychange foundation (read more here). Better female & non-binary representation is the future and we are buzzing to be playing our small part in equalising music this Freshers' Week.

If you want to find out more information about who we are, what we do, and how you can get involved once you're settled in at Uni then just drop us a line at hello@qmunion.org.uk (parts of our website are currently under maintenance but everything you need to know will be on there in time for the start of term).

We hope you enjoy the line-up, and you better get yourself ready for an incredible start to your University of Glasgow experience.

WHAT'S ON?

Below you'll find the main / headline events we have on each night from Friday 13th to Saturday 21st September. It's worth bearing in mind that the events from Monday 16th - Friday 20th are only accessible by registering for a Freshers' Band (which we'll explain below), whilst the weekend events are open to all students with paid entry.

To stay up to date on all things Freshers' Week, we recommend you like / follow the official University of Glasgow Freshers' Week 2019 accounts, and remember that if you don't see the official #UofGFW19 logo (the round one with Uni tower) then it isn't official.

In the next few days and weeks, we'll share more information about day-time and early evening events we'll have on in the union throughout the week (check out our social media pages to stay up to date), but for now enjoy the night events and get hyped up for a big week.

During Freshers' if you're ever unsure about what's on in the QM, just grab one of our super-friendly Freshers' Helpers in the red tops and they'll get you up to script!

DOUBLE DENIM

A 90S / 00S THEME NIGHT WITH MILK DJS

Remember that strange period in the late 90s / early 00s when celebrities were Gods, reality TV was everywhere, and fashion had Logged Off? This is DOUBLE DENIM: a tongue-in-cheek celebration of the Y2K aesthetic: with its weird & wacky visuals, off-the-wall fashions and, most importantly, the cheesy over-produced pop music that you can't help but dance to. MILK DJs will bring you the very choicest cuts of Cheesy Pop, RnB and Hip-Hop all night long. In terms of artists, think: Britney, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Robbie Williams, Will Young, TLC, Beyonce, Shakira, The Black Eyed Peas.

Open to band holders only. Register here. Double denim recommended.

THE NINTH WAVE

W/ DAMNDIRTYDUKE AND GRAVELLE

The Glasgow-based 4-piece have been making waves in the nation with their own bewitching brand of “dark post-punk laced with stealth pop hooks” and are the breakthrough indie band to watch this year. With Part 1 of their stunning debut album ‘Infancy' just released, and Part 2 on its way in November via Distiller Records, the band are right on the brink of going stratospheric. On Saturday 21st September QMU are giving you the opportunity to see THE NINTH WAVE play in our intimate venue before they blast off to even greater heights. Support from DamnDirtyDuke and Gravelle.

Entry £10 for students, £12 standard. Tickets here.

SATURDAY 21st

19:00 - 22:30

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The Freshers' Band is pretty simple. However, just as having 4 student bodies seems a bit weird at first, we know it could do with a bit of explaining.

Basically, in order to attend the headline Freshers' Week events (those on after 22:00 from Monday 16th to Friday 20th in our venue and in the Glasgow University Union - GUU down the road) then you'll need to register and buy a Freshers' Band. This band will not get you in to the events taking place in our venue on Friday 13th, Saturday 14th, or Saturday 21st as these are paid entry and open to all students and guests.

You can register by heading to the Official Freshers' Week site. There you'll be asked to provide billing and payment information plus the name, email address and College of each attendee you are registering.

By registering and purchasing a band you confirm that you have been accepted to study at the University of Glasgow starting in the academic year 2019/2020. Anyone unable to prove student status when asked to do so at any point in Freshers’ Week will have their band confiscated and will be ineligible for a refund.

The Freshers' Week site is run by our sensible and rather serious pals at the Glasgow University Students' Representative Council (SRC). If you have any issues with your registration then get in touch with them via enquiries@src.gla.ac.uk or call 0141 330 5497.
